The Balance of Trade Liberalization and Environmental Protection: An Analysis on the Mechanism of Environmental Protection in the WTO

As an international organization to facilitate trade liberalization, the World Trade Organization (WTO) is very difficult to balance the relationship between trade liberalization and environmental protection. The WTO stresses on the protection of trade liberalization in the institutional establishment, however, in the trade dispute settlement practices, the Dispute Settlement Body has paid more and more attention to the environmental protection. In the Doha Round, the Members of WTO have had a great argument over the issue of trade and environment, and the failure of the negotiation indicates the balance of the relationship between trade and environment will face more and more challenges in the regime of the WTO.
