Abstract:The last decade has witnessed the development of many empirical models to predict corporate bankruptcy and of several bankruptcy theories. This paper reviews and integrates these two strands of research and finds a substantial amount of overlap. However, the overlap is not perfect. The paper presents a new theory of bankruptcy that appears to fit the data better. The paper also suggests directions for future empirical and theoretical research.
