Abstract:The UK is in the process of slowly expanding its civilian nuclear power programme, with the ultimate aim of all-nuclear electricity. The government is not currently following a particular long-term plan, but each new nuclear development is considered on its individual merits—an approach which concentrates only on short-term objectives. This article argues that more attention should be given to the longterm planning and land use implications of this development—a task that can be helped by the new technology of Geographic Information Systems.
