| Abstract: | Silence in conversation can often lead to misunderstanding and displeasure in intercultural communication. Chinese people prefer to use silence more often than westerners in conversation and we are good at using silence to express what we want to express. Silence in conversation can have various meanings which westerners can not understand exactly. In this paper, the authors show some examples observed in daily life and analyze the different meanings when keeping silent in conversation. Besides, the reasons why Chinese and westerners understand the silence in conversation quite differently are also analyzed. |
