| Abstract: | This paper has argued for a discourse approach to teaching speech acts or functions in China based on insights gained from examining a naturally occurring conversation, which exhibits clear patterns and structures of the discourse and also shows that the appropriate realization of any speech act is highly relative to the sociocultural context. |
