Reading Two Gallants in Post-colonial Context

James Joyce considered Two Gallants to be one of the best stories in Dubliners,but the story had dimensions that have not yet been fully realized.In application of theories of Gramsci’s hegemony,Fanon’s and Spivak’s post colonialism,it hopes to disclose how British colonizers keep domination of power by a combination of "political coercion" and "active consent" from three classes,i.e.the upper,the middle and the subaltern.Thus the values of the colonizers became "common sense" values of all,a consensus culture developed in which the subordinated Dubliners identified themselves with the colonizers,and helped to maintain the status quo rather than revolting.
