Abstract:Developments in tobacco farming run against the grain of mainstream Cuban agriculture: tobacco is 75% private whereas agriculture generally is 15% private. This article looks at what made it so, starting with the transition from capitalist forms of plantation, tenant and subtenant farming and sharecropping to the new post-1959 farming systems in both the state and private sectors. The article examines changing relations of production and the family unit, the gender division of remunerated and unremunerated work, particularly necessary family work in social and domestic production and the challenge to established gender patterns, with special reference to the new farming cooperatives.
