Abstract: | Illiteracy is a critical economic and health care problem in the United States. People with low health literacy are more likely to report poor health, have an incomplete understanding of their health problems and treatment, and are at greater risk of hospitalization. Strategies and incentives for population health improvement affected by health literacy are recommended. Potential economic factors are discussed. Major nursing roles in the area of health literacy are reviewed. |
