| Abstract: | Leo Strauss has become a big hit in Chinese intellectual circle, and his discourse has been incorporated in the pluralistic reformulations of the problem of China. By sorting out the diversified meanings of the idea of republic, this essay aims to reveal Strauss＇ painstaking reflections on the principles of civilization. This author maintains that the debate between the traditional and the modern is inextricably connected with the self-consciousness of civilization, and that the revival of classical republicanism will be a global historic mission for future scholars. |
