| Abstract: | This essay holds that the understanding and application of euphemisms should be associated with context. Accordingly, it analyzes their two essential properties: relevance to taboos in meaning and pleasant to the hearers in communication. It also deals with the major contextual factors that affect euphemisms' application ,namely participants, topics, situational context and cultural background. |
