Authors:David Green
Institution:Alan Maynard is Professor of Economics and Director of the Centre for Health Economics, University of York. He is also co-director (with Professor David Robinson) of the Addiction Research Centre. Universities of York and Hull. He has written extensively on the social services.
Abstract:Was the Scargill-MacGregor confrontation an episode in collective bargaining or a clash between economic and political interest groups? Dr Green, a political scientist and a former Labour councillor, argues that the NUM President's motivation lay deeper in the attempt to use the Union for a political attack on ‘capitalism’ by exploiting the ‘liberal ethic’.
