Great Success for Motorola in China

Since its initial investment of RMB 1 billion yuan in China in 1992, Motorola now boasts a total of over 10,000 employees, eight joint ventures and 26 subsidiaries. We have also been making investment in the western regions of China. Leshan-Phoenix Semi-conductor Co., Ltd. with an investment of RMB 2.3 billion yuan has become the star enterprise in the western regions.The Chinese Government has provided good investment environment and preferential policies for foreign enterprises, which is a great encouragement to us. In August this year, CEO of Motorola declared to the Tianjin Municipal Government that it would make an additional investment of RMB 16 billion yuan in China. By now, we have made five additional investments and our total investment reached RMB 28.5 billion yuan. Motorola is now the biggest foreign-funded enterprise in China.Motorola welcomes the new policy of encouraging investment companies to set up R&D centers in China by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation. "Creating a new scientific high with China" has been our goal. By now, Motorola (China) Research Institute has 18 R&D centers and 800 technical staff with an investment of RMB 1.3 billion yuan. It has extensive cooperation with China's research institutes and institutions of higher learning. By 2001, the R&D centers of Motorola in China will grow to 25 with the technical staff increasing to 1,000 and an investment of RMB 1.8 billion yuan in R&D.With the strong support of the Chinese Government and people, Motorola has attained great success in China and ranks second in "Foreign-funded Enterprises with the Best General Impression" list sponsored by Fortune magazine. Motorola ranks first in a recent appraisal of "1000 High-tech Foreign-funded Enterprises in China" sponsored by China High-tech Enterprise Development Evaluation Center. Our salesvolume in China reached RMB 26 billion yuan last year with tax turnover of RMB 2.8 billion yuan. The local purchase volume was RMB 6.7 billion yuan. The export volume was RMB 8.2 billion yuan and totaled RMB 10.2 billion yuan purchase abroad. Motorola is now the largest foreign export-oriented enterprise in China. The practice proves that it is a correct strategy to increase investment in high-tech area in China.
