Ma Weihua:A Problem of Distance

"You can’t get too far or too close," says Ma Weihua as he attempts to find just the right spot to view an oil painting of a sunflower hanging on the wall of the reception room on the 51st floor of the China Merchant Bank Headquarters. Suddenly he begins to talk about his mother, "My mother lives with me,but since I get up so early and come home very late she already hasn’t seen me in a month.Yesterday she called me.’Don’t worry nothing is the matter.1 just wanted to hear your voice.’ It was at that moment that 1 realized that despite being physically close to my mother, I still did not understand her situation or her feelings" This same goes for business:distance can affect our judgment.Over the many years Ma Weihua has worked hard for China Merchants Bank he has always felt that the company’s business management and strategies were sound.However, the "leak of personal customer information" that occurred in March was a wake-up call for Ma Weihua,"It was like a big slap in the face.It turns out we are still a bit far from our goal of meticulous management." So far four of the large state-owned merchant banks have fallen behind as more and more small and medium sized joint-stock banks have joined the competition.As competition becomes fiercer China Merchant Bank’s retail business and services provided to small and middle enterprises has weakened or even been surpassed.Therefore,in 2012 China Merchant Bank decided to undergo its "second transformation". Will this plan be the means by which China Merchant Bank is able to turn itself around? During our interview with Ma Weihua he repeatedly stressed that he never talks about government regulation,major stock owners and the competition. Not talking about these subjects is a strategic decision on his part,but to sit by and do nothing about these things would be a major error on his part.This is one of the major problems facing Ma Weihua.
