Abstract:To outsource, or not to outsource? This article discusses the factors behind IBM's intensified drive to transfer non-core activities to external suppliers. While highlighting some of the potential pitfalls, it concludes that the benefits of a well-prepared outsourcing strategy go beyond simple cost savings. In the light of the author's own experience, recommendations are made about activities likely to respond well to outsourcing, and advice is offered on the best way to win backing for such moves within a company.
