Abstract:In an intelligibility experiment on the records of 90 subjects, the author found that the intelligibility of EFL' s English was heavily relied on context. The intelligibility of the subjects was less than 0. 6. The author went further study and found that 8 types of pronunciation "errors" were detrimental to intelligibility. Referred to acoustic analysis, the author discovered that all the 8 types of errors involved with qualitive segmental changes, which is distinct from "sub-standard pronunciation features" that are not involved with qualitive segmental changes and were found innocuous to intelligibility under context effects. Some sub-standandard features of suprasegmental factors such as intonation, rhythm, and of pause would mislead the listeners occasionally, and consequently more efforts were needed in the comprehension. However, on condition that 3 times of listening were allowed in the experiment, these factors were not severe enough to result in intelligibility breakdowns.
Keywords:pronunciation "error"   EFL   intelligibility
