The paper makes use of the detailed data to present a comprehensive picture of the fiscal pressure faced by the advanced economies with aging population. Increasingly more public spending is distributed to the social security and health care and due to this government deficit and public debt has been marching on a fast-rising track. In addition to the rising old-dependency ratio, the increasingly lower labor participation rate of the elder induced by the pension and other relevant social security system such as unemployment insurance and disability insurance has been playing an at least equally important role. This is of tremendous implication for the buildup of a well-functioning social security system in China as we are at an early stage of constructing such a system.
