Was Spain different? Spanish historical backwardness revisited

In this paper we analyze the Spanish economic backwardness in a historical perspective. Following Chenery and Syrquin's methodology we discuss Spain's backwardness by comparing its development with a European norm. We conclude that Spanish structural change lagged behind improvements in per capita income. The Spanish experience could be described as a retarded one, although Spain did not fit a Third World or a Latin pattern.
