The debate and prospect of European Banking Union proposal

Since 2012, the European Banking Union, serving as an important initiative in response to the European debt crisis, has made remarkable progress in a few months. However, there is currently much debate and disagreement over the European Banking Union＇s functions and relevant system design. The article reviews the process for specifying and improving the European Banking Union proposal, and the views from various parties on significant issues under debate. It indicates that the EU countries will put efforts in promoting the establishment of the banking union in phases only due to the complexity and difficulty in the issues involved, and the longterm impacts have yet to be observed.
