The causes of coal mine accidents
Authors:Andrew Hopkins  Joanne Palser
Abstract:In attempting to account for the variation in accident rates in underground coal mines in New South Wales this article examines potential explanatory variables and concludes that the most important cause is mine size. The author explains this as a consequence of the greater bureaucratisation and decreased worker autonomy which characterise large mines.
