The Prehistory of California Gardens and Its Impact

The California Garden and California School is one of theimportant origins of modern landscape design practice and theory inthe United States and has profoundly influenced the direction of theworld landscape. This paper traces the antecedent history of moderngardens in California. Based on the analysis of California''s climate,geography and its floristic province, the article sorts out the historyof garden transitions from the aborigines era, the monastery era, theMexico era, the gold rush era, the exposition era, and the rural era tothe great depression era. Then, conjunct with California''s botanicalgarden development system, the article points out the characteristicsof inheritance and transmutation in California gardens from pre-modern to modern times and their impact.
