The economy of Japan has been beset by long-term stagnation ever since the collapse of the bubble economy. Under the pressure from both inside and outside, the Japanese companies had to bring some changes to their way of corporate governance, of which the reform of board of directors is a component. The reform of board of directors of Japanese companies includes reducing the size of the board and introducing outside directors to the board. However, because the reform has been pushed forward by the management of companies themselves, it is not a thorough one.
