Abstract:The temperature and thermal stresses of concrete around intake steel penstock in dam of hydroelectric plant affect it's run and safety. This paper analyses the concrete temperature and thermal stresses by three dimensional finite element method, the concrete placing process is modeled in the analysis. The research results reveal that although the concrete temperature is comparatively high, the thermal stresses are not large, the thermal tensile stresses during run period are rather high, which combined with the tensile stresses caused by water pressure can have a significant effect on the stress state of concrete .So thermal stresses during run period should be given enough attension.
