U.S.-Japan automobile trade: A Bayesian test of a product life cycle

Using Bayesian procedures for gradual switching regression models we estimate shifts in production and demand functions. We find that by 1970 the Japanese automobile industry had attained an efficient mass production process and was ready to meet the shift in the U.S. demand for Japanese cars.
