Lu Zuofu: the Shipping Typhoon in Modern China

Born and brought up in a poor family in Sichuan Province,Lu Zuofu taught himself after quitting school.As a businessman with primary school education,he made achievements in diversi ed elds,ranging from establishing schools,building libraries and museums,to popularizing the culture and education.Minsheng Company he set up in 1925 was one of the largest and the most in uential private enterprises in modern China."If Lu Zuofu were still alive,I would not have achieved all this." the Chinese shipping giant Bao Yugang once said.The comment may shed some light on the importance of Lu Zuofu in modern Chinese shipping history.Lu is kind of a legendary figure.When he ran the shipping business,even the warlords were willing to deliver their ships to him,which eventually made him the "shipping king";at the most urgent moment in the war against Japan,he succeeded in the great retreat from Yichang,Hubei Province,with merely his own strength;when he started the education program,he turned Beibei into a di erent world;he was appointed as a high-ranking o cial by the warlords and the then national government many times,but he scarcely accepted the o er or resigned soon after taking the position.
