Through the National Water Act of 1998,groundwater management in South Africa will be moving from its present low man-agement interest to integrated wate r resource management,with national government as custodian.The allow s for a phased implementation of groundwater use authorization th rough measures such as scheduled permissible use and general authorizations.Groundwater protection will operate in an integrated water r esource management framework throu gh prescribed tools like a resource c lassification system and a reserve,protecting basic human needs and aquatic ecosystems.The transition from a highly centralized situ ation towards groundwater playing its appropriate role in country-wide catchment management agen cies and water user associations wil l have to be bridged with innovative strategies of sharing capacity,resource and infromation between all the relevant role-players in government and the private sector.
