In this novel, the author typically analyses the different periods of the history. From different angles, such as tradjtional culture, comparing with the same type of characters, looking into the author's own unusual experi-ences , he expounds his characters 'philosophy of life, doctrines of Confucius, the relation between life and Buddhist doctrines, their aesthetic standards and their views on Chinese traditional GongFu, which clearly shows the connotation of national culture and the great difference from the past chivalry novels on culture. In all of the authors novels, Duan Yu, one of his characters, was the most contentious one. He was also the most cultured of all.
