The early managed fund industry: Investment trusts in 19th century Britain

The early years of the 21st century have been a difficult and challenging time for the managed funds industry. The neglected history of managed funds reveals prior episodes of sustained growth, questionable practices, upheaval and inevitably, regulation. The first fully diversified managed fund appeared in Britain in 1868, and the industry remained largely a British preserve until the rise of the investment company and the mutual fund in the United States during the 1920s. This paper documents the features of the early trusts, discusses the rise of the industry and the challenges it survived in the early years, and draws parallels with facets of the finance industry of today.     

Virtual schools

Virtual schools have already made their appearance. This paper examines the factors which promote or slow the spread of virtual schools. Technological change, economic rationalism, and the suitability of conventional schools for the information age are identified as reasons for the continued growth of virtual schools. Conversely, the identification of an appropriate pedagogy, the lack of required teaching skills, concerns for the reshaping of human values, socialisation, and the continued need for student supervision are seen as reasons why virtual schools will not rapidly overtake conventional ones. It is concluded that virtual schools will continue to increase in the 21st century, and that appropriate planning must be made for their impact.     

Remarks on “Financial Services Integration: Right for some,Wrong for Others?”

Abstract

I have been asked to provide some introductory remarks on the structure of the financial services industry in the 21st century. Each of the panelists will give their own unique perspective on why consolidation is or is not a good idea for the firms where they work. I, on the other hand, would like to take a little time to provide an overview of what I see as competing “models” for the delivery of financial services. I will try to argue that these models are not necessarily mutually exclusive and that certain clientele may be attracted to one or the other. Thus, integration will indeed turn out to be right for some and wrong for others.

The future of work is considered in the light of ideas about and trends in leisure. It is concluded that in the 21st century there will be a restructuring of society's values regarding the work ethic and its relationship to the rest of social and individual life.     

Higher education in the 21st Century: Perspectives on an emerging body of literature

This paper summarises the major themes in the body of writing which purports to describe what higher education will look like in the 21st Century. Some reasons why change might be far more pervasive in the first decade of the 21st Century than in the last three decades of the 20th Century are the increasingly harsh economic environment of higher education, the increasing integration of higher education with the world of business and industry, and the widespread use of information technology. It is suggested that the only constituency from which there will be opposition to the scenarios depicted in the 21st Century higher education literature is faculty of colleges and universities.
