Numerous empirical studies establish that inflation has a negative short‐run effect on stock returns but few studies report a positive, long‐run Fisher effect for stock returns. Using stock price and goods price data from six industrial countries, we show that long‐run Fisher elasticities of stock prices with respect to goods prices exceed unity and range from 1.04 to 1.65, which tends to support the Fisher effect. We also find that the time path of the response of stock prices to a shock in goods prices exhibits an initial negative response, which turns positive over longer horizons. These results help reconcile previous short‐run and long‐run empirical evidence on stock returns and inflation. Also, they reveal that stock prices have a long memory with respect to inflation shocks, such that investors should expect stocks to be a good inflation hedge over a long holding period. We develop a method of measuring ex-ante real interest rates using prices of index and nominal bonds. Employing this method and newly available data, we directly test the Fisher hypothesis that the real rate of interest is independent of inflation expectations. We find a negative correlation between ex-ante real interest rates and expected inflation. This contradicts the Fisher hypothesis but is consistent with the theories of Mundell and Tobin, Darby and Feldstein, and Stulz. We also find that nominal interest rates include an inflation risk premium that is positively related to a proxy for inflation uncertainty.  相似文献

Event studies are an important tool for empirical research in Finance. Since the seminal contribution of Fama et al. [Fama, E., Fisher, L., Jensen, M., Roll, R., 1969. The adjustment of stock prices to new information. International Economic Review 10, 1–21], there have been many enhancements to the classical test methodology. Somewhat surprisingly, the estimation period has attracted less interest. It is usually routinely determined as a fixed window prior to the event announcement day. In this study, we propose a test that reduces the impact of potentially unrelated events during the estimation period. Our proposition is based on a two-state version of the classical market model as a return-generating process. We present standard specification and power analyses. The results highlight the importance of explicitly controlling for unrelated events occurring during the estimation window, especially in the presence of event-induced increase in return volatility.  相似文献

An empirical model incorporating the Friedman inflation uncertainty hypothesis is evaluated on capital asset pricing in conjunction with the covariance effect of the Fisher inflation hypothesis. The Fisher-Friedman capital asset pricing empirical model (FFCAPM) is compared to the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) and the Chen-Boness (C-B) model for explanatory power and significance over three periods. The FFCAPM performed better than the two competing models in explaining the variation in equity returns. The Friedman hypotheses of a positive economy-wide inflation adjustment and a negative inflation uncertainty impact are supported. A firm-specific inflation response of Fisher inflation covariance was also supported. These results indicate that empirical support for the Fisher effect may be limited given the normal testing procedure of simply adding an inflation term as in previous studies.  相似文献

We examine the long-run relationship between stock prices and goods prices to gauge whether stock market investment can hedge against inflation. Data from 16 OECD countries over the period 1970–2006 are used. We account for different inflation regimes with the use of sub-sample regressions, while maintaining the power of tests in small sample sizes by combining time-series data across our sample countries in a panel unit root and panel cointegration econometric framework. The evidence supports a positive long-run relationship between goods prices and stock prices with the estimated goods price coefficient being in line with the generalized Fisher hypothesis.  相似文献

Recent research suggests that volatility has an important role to play in the appearance of the compass rose pattern. The introduction of decimal prices on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) provides an ideal opportunity to test this hypothesis using actual market data. The empirical evidence presented in this paper suggests that the 85 per cent reduction in the tick/volatility ratio resulting from the decimalisation of prices was not sufficient to eliminate the compass rose pattern.  相似文献

Variance-ratio methodology is used to test the hypothesis that Latin American emerging equity market prices follow a random walk. The data are monthly index prices in local currency from December 1975 to March 1991 for Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico. The variance-ratio tests reject the random walk hypothesis. However, runs tests indicate that Latin American equity markets are weak-form efficient. These empirical findings suggest that domestic investors might not be able to develop trading strategies that would allow them to earn excess returns.  相似文献

The paper investigates the time series properties and the efficiency of the secondary market for LDCs syndicated loans. The data corresponding to weekly secondary market prices for 26 LDCs syndicated loans are divided into two subperiods: from July 1988 to June 1990 and from July 1990 to May 1992. Tests of the random walk hypothesis are conducted based on the Augmented Dickey-Fuller methodology and the variance-ratio test of Lo and MacKinlay. The efficiency of the market is tested by means of filter rule tests. The empirical findings suggest that the secondary market for LDCs syndicated loans has become more efficient over time and that loan prices follow random walks.  相似文献

The hypothesis of market efficiency is typically rejected by standard variance-bounds tests which assume stationary asset prices. A number of researchers, however, argue that tests used in previous studies are inappropriate since asset prices appear to be generated by nonstationary processes. In this paper, we propose a regression-based variance-bounds test that is valid when the asset price is an integrated process. We apply this test to annual U.S. data over the 1889 to 1985 sample period using measures of the perfect-foresight price constructed from a nonlinear asset-pricing equation that allows for a stochastic discount parameter. The results suggest that the data appear consistent with a version of the efficient-market hypothesis detailed in this paper.  相似文献

The Fisherian theory of interest asserts that a fully perceived change in inflation would be reflected in nominal interest rates and stock returns in the same direction in the long run. This paper examines the Fisherian hypothesis of asset returns using alternative techniques of linear regression, and vector error correction models to examine the nature of the relationship between stock returns and inflation in the UK. Consistent with the Fisherian hypothesis, empirical evidence in the linear regression model suggests a positive and statistically significant relationship between stock returns and inflation, which regards common stock as a good hedge against inflation. The results based on the unit root and cointegration tests indicate a long-run reliable relationship between price levels, share prices, and interest rates which could be interpreted as the long-run determinants of stock returns. The findings also suggest a bidirectional relationship between stock returns and inflation. The evidence of a significant Fisher effect is robust across model specifications.  相似文献

This paper presents a new perspective on the Fisher hypothesis, which states a positive relationship between nominal stock returns and inflation. The new approach is based on a wavelet multiscaling method that decomposes a given time series on a scale-by-scale basis. Empirical results show that there is a positive relationship between stock returns and inflation at the shortest scale (1-month period) and at the longest scale (128-month period), while a negative relationship is shown at the intermediate scales. This indicates that the nominal return results are supportive of the Fisher hypothesis for risky assets in d1 and s7 of the wavelet domain, while the stock returns do not play a role as an inflation hedge at the intermediate scales. The key empirical results show that time-scale decomposition provides a valuable means of testing the Fisher hypothesis, since a number of stock returns and inflation puzzles previously noted in the literature are resolved and explained by the wavelet analysis.  相似文献

The random-walk version of the efficient market hypothesis is tested for the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) using its composite, industrial, and financial index weekly closing prices. We conduct an empirical analysis of forward prices in the PJM electricity market using a high‐frequency data set of hourly spot and day‐ahead forward prices. We find that there are significant risk premia in electricity forward prices. These premia vary systematically throughout the day and are directly related to economic risk factors, such as the volatility of unexpected changes in demand, spot prices, and total revenues. These results support the hypothesis that electricity forward prices in the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland market are determined rationally by risk‐averse economic agents.  相似文献

This paper extends the current literature on PPP by re-examining the validity of the PPP hypothesis for the three key currencies of the recent floating exchange rate period, in a multilateral framework. We argue that PPP testing is more adequate in a system context, which takes into account the dynamic interactions of exchange rates and prices of more than two economies, simultaneously. In the system analysis framework, some form of causality among the variables under consideration is also assessed empirically with the aid of weak exogeneity tests. The results illustrate the importance of the multilateral testing. Positive evidence for PPP is found: long-run PPP is supported for the US and Germany but also for the US and Japan, in contrast to evidence of earlier empirical studies. In addition, causality is found running from the US prices to the exchange rates and German and Japanese prices.  相似文献

Investor sentiment is widely recognized as the major determinant of cryptocurrency prices. Although earlier research has revealed the influence of investor sentiment on cryptocurrency prices, it has not yet generated cohesive empirical findings on an important question: How effective is investor sentiment in predicting cryptocurrency prices? To address this gap, we propose a novel prediction model based on the Bitcoin Misery Index, using trading data for cryptocurrency rather than judgments from individuals who are not Bitcoin investors, as well as bagged support vector regression (BSVR), to forecast Bitcoin prices. The empirical analysis is performed for the period between March 2018 and May 2022. The results of this study suggest that the addition of the sentiment index enhances the predictive performance of BSVR significantly. Moreover, the proposed prediction system, enhanced with an automatic feature selection component, outperforms state-of-the-art methods for predicting cryptocurrency for the next 30 days.  相似文献

In this paper, a methodology is developed to solve these problems. 中国房地产价格持续上涨的成因一直是学界研究的热点。产业集聚作为市场经济活动的必然现象,是否会对房地产价格产生影响?以中国35个大中城市2000~2016年的数据为样本,构建静态面板模型和动态面板模型实证检验产业集聚对房地产价格的影响。研究表明,产业集聚对房地产价格具有显著的正向影响;进一步研究发现,人口集聚和土地成本是产业集聚影响房地产价格的重要中介,即产业集聚能够通过人口集聚和土地价格上涨来推动房价上涨。基于研究结论,为保证我国房地产市场健康发展,应采取促进区域均衡协调发展、多渠道保障城市新流入人口住房和加快土地市场改革等政策措施。  相似文献

This paper, utilizing dealer's “trading book” information, presents some empirical evidence supporting the validity of a dealer pricing model. It shows that much of the transaction prices variation may be explained by the specialist's optimal determination of his bid and ask quotes. Furthermore, it demonstrates that the dealer's bid-ask spread is an important explanatory variable in the observed transaction return. Finally, it indicates that the dealer's inventory level may affect his quotes and thus the transaction prices and order arrivals. The paper provides insights into the relationship between transaction prices and equilibrium prices, which will permit more extensive use of transaction data in empirical investigations. It also provides a better understanding of optimal dealer pricing strategies, suggesting that the proposed empirical model may be used to evaluate a dealer's trading performance.  相似文献
