A comparative goodness-of-fit analysis of distributions of some Lévy processes and Heston model to stock index returns

In this paper, we investigate the goodness-of-fit of three Lévy processes, namely Variance-Gamma (VG), Normal-Inverse Gaussian (NIG) and Generalized Hyperbolic (GH) distributions, and probability distribution of the Heston model to index returns of twenty developed and emerging stock markets. Furthermore, we extend our analysis by applying a Markov regime switching model to identify normal and turbulent periods. Our findings indicate that the probability distribution of the Heston model performs well for emerging markets under full sample estimation and retains goodness of fit for high volatility periods, as it explicitly accounts for the volatility process. On the other hand, the distributions of the Lévy processes, especially the VG and NIG distributions, generally improves upon the fit of the Heston model, particularly for developed markets and low volatility periods. Furthermore, some distributions yield to significantly large test statistics for some countries, even though they fit well to other markets, which suggest that properties of the stock markets are crucial in identifying the best distribution representing empirical returns.

About handy, handmade and handsome models

Statistical inference deals with natural variation between units and with uncertainty due to sampling, measurement error and random assignment to treatments. Almost always it does so within one model, assumed fixed and valid. Here, however, variation of conclusions due to variation in model choice will be discussed. Heuristics to find appropriate models are seldom taught, and model fit tests and model fit diagnostics are far from optimal. The use of more than one model for the same data is illustrated by examples from Item Response Theory.

基于长记忆的中国期货市场实证研究

通过某期货公司研发部编制的期货指数,基于长记忆研究方法,运用经典的R/S分析、修正的R/S分析,分别建立了研究长记忆的ARFIMA模型、FIGARCH模型和ARFLMA-FIGARCH模型。并运用这些模型对我国上海期货交易所的铜、铝、大连期货交易所的大豆、玉米、豆粕以及郑州期货交易所的小麦的收益率序列进行相关研究和分析,得出它们的收益率序列以及收益率波动序列均存在长记忆性,且ARFLMA(0,d1,0)-FIGARCH(1,d2,0)模型的预测效果较好。     

基于小波的灰色动态组合模型及其在变形预测中的应用

Hierarchical Models for the Analysis of Likert Scales in Regression and Item Response Analysis

Appropriate modelling of Likert‐type items should account for the scale level and the specific role of the neutral middle category, which is present in most Likert‐type items that are in common use. Powerful hierarchical models that account for both aspects are proposed. To avoid biased estimates, the models separate the neutral category when modelling the effects of explanatory variables on the outcome. The main model that is propagated uses binary response models as building blocks in a hierarchical way. It has the advantage that it can be easily extended to include response style effects and non‐linear smooth effects of explanatory variables. By simple transformation of the data, available software for binary response variables can be used to fit the model. The proposed hierarchical model can be used to investigate the effects of covariates on single Likert‐type items and also for the analysis of a combination of items. For both cases, estimation tools are provided. The usefulness of the approach is illustrated by applying the methodology to a large data set.     

Posterior model probabilities via path-based pairwise priors

We focus on Bayesian model selection for the variable selection problem in large model spaces. The challenge is to search the huge model space adequately, while accurately approximating model posterior probabilities for the visited models. The issue of choice of prior distributions for the visited models is also important.
