In this paper, developments in human resource management in manufacturing in modern Britain based on a national sample are examined. The organization and role of human resource management, employee involvement, training and development, work practices and rewards are all targeted for an assessment of current practices. This is a prelude for a contrast between manufacturing and non-manufacturing. The conclusion is that the similarities between manufacturing and non-manufacturing substantially outweigh the differences. By inference, too, developments in human resource management practices are likely to reflect changes in the broader environment of businesses (and differences between companies) rather than being specific to the main industrial sectors.  相似文献

Abstract

Data on crop production are assembled for four provinces—Punjab, Sindh, North-West Frontier Province and Balochistan—for the period from 1980/81 to 2005/06 to examine inter-provincial differences in productivity growth rates. Propositions are put forward and examined to explain the superior productivity performance of Punjabi crop producers over those in Sindh and North-West Frontier Province, and the unusual productivity trends in Balochistan. The major factors relate to economic infrastructure and human capital. The impact of agricultural research is difficult to discern, and further work is required to assess the lagged effects of research expenditures on TFP growth.

Explication des déséquilibres interprovinciaux dans l'augmentation de la productivité dans la production de cultures au Pakistan

RÉSUMÉ On a rassemblé des données pour les quatre provinces suivantes: Penjab, Sindh, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, et Baloutchistan, pour la période 1980/81 à 2005/06, afin d'examiner les différences interprovinciales dans les taux d'expansion de la productivité. On présente et on examine des hypothèses pour expliquer le rendement supérieur des producteurs du Penjab par rapport à ceux du Sindh et du Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, ainsi que les tendances de productivité inhabituelles du Baloutchistan. Les principaux facteurs se rapportent à l'infrastructure économique et au capital humain. L'impact de la recherche sur l'agriculture est difficile à établir, et des travaux supplémentaires seront nécessaires pour évaluer les effets décalés des frais de recherche sur l'expansion du TFP.

Explicación de la desigualdad inter-provincial en el crecimiento de la productividad de la producción de cultivos en Pakistán

EXTRACTO Se recopilan datos sobre la producción de cultivos de cuatro provincias: Punjab, Sindh, Provincia de la Frontera Norte-Oeste y Balochistan, durante el período de 1980/81 a 2005/06, para examinar las diferencias inter-provinciales en los índices de crecimiento de la productividad. Se plantean y examinan propuestas para explicar el mayor rendimiento de la productividad de los productores de cultivos Punjabi con respecto a los de Sindh y la Provincia de la Frontera Norte-Oeste, y las inusuales tendencias de la productividad de Balochistan. Los factores principales se relacionan con la infraestructura económica y el capital humano. El impacto de la investigación agrícola es difícil de discernir, y se requiere más trabajo para evaluar los efectos retrasados de los gastos de investigación en el crecimiento TFP.   相似文献

Abstract

The article explores which reform trends are expected to play a significant role in the further development of local government in European countries. Analysis is based on an adopted Delphi survey of (mainly academic) local government experts from thirty-two countries. Results include a list of trends structured by the perceived importance for the coming ten years. Redistributing responsibilities and duties across levels of government constitute the highest ratings out of all trends. Furthermore, results do not provide clear evidence to support a shift from public management to governance as has recently been proclaimed in academic debate and literature. Management topics continue to be of great importance. Last but not least, clusters extracted point to different reform groups, which highlight more reluctant or enthusiastic attitudes to the relevance of the suggested trends of the study.  相似文献

Abstract

Entrepreneurial brokers play a major role in governance networks in a disaster response setting. By identifying patterns of interactions between members in a network of embedded ties, we can explore the strategic use of brokers to mobilize an effective coordination system in the case of the 2013 Philippines disaster. Empirical data were gathered from reported interactions beginning 2 days after Typhoon Haiyan for the following 4 weeks. This paper concludes with practical-based recommendations for international and local agencies to enhance their organizational competencies to serve as entrepreneurial brokers in emergency management.  相似文献

In a country with an ageing work-force, a decline in the number of new entrants to the labour market and an acute labour shortage, it would be reasonable to assume that employers would encourage older workers to remain in employment for as long as possible. In the case of Singapore, however, private sector employers often retired employees at age 55 and hired younger workers in their place. In many cases older workers re-hired had to accept lower pay and lower grade jobs. In an attempt to tackle this sort of age discrimination in employment, the government passed the Retirement Age Act in 1993. Prior to its enactment, the government urged employers to raise the retirement age voluntarily, but the response was poor, especially in the non-unionized sector. This paper argues that employers resisted the extension of the retirement age because they perceived older workers in stereotypical terms. The main issues which gave rise to the Retirement Age legislation are discussed. So also is the possible impact of the legislation on some HRM practices. The paper also proposes some future directions for research on older workers in Singapore.  相似文献

Speed and flexibility in managing the information is of bigger and bigger importance in management at present. Efficient management of a company requires an access to current information which constitutes the key potential of a company, difficult to forge and of a unique character, thanks to which an appropriate managing the information is an important factor of competitive domination. The best way to achieve such an effect is to computerize the management. The application of computer equipment facilitates the information flow and therefore it dispenses managers from mechanical duties and allows them to focus on conceptual work connected with using the gathered information, whereas a tedious effort of its processing is done by a computer system.  相似文献

An examination of the relationship between marketing and SMEs raises two kinds of questions: the first relates to the categories of SMEs studied, and it goes without saying that their responses will depend on their size (very small, small, and medium); the second depends on the elements likely or not to bring out a marketing approach. In fact, we can infer a large part of this approach from the answers having to do with segmentation practices, positioning, and information research. These three practices constitute the foundation of this approach. For all that, to ask questions directly (especially with regard to segmentation) would lead to biased responses. Taking these premises into account and with understanding of marketing behaviour in the medium-sized firms as an objective, we conducted two surveys in two locations, France and Québec (Canada), in which only enterprises with 50 to 250 employees were retained. The results show that if the marketing approach of the medium-sized firms is always focused on client distinction (more than on the market as such), competition leading to positioning is very much a part of their preoccupations; finally, these enterprises commonly practice commercial intelligence. This implies structuring commercial activity in general and marketing in particular, the two not always well delimited. These last two traits differentiate them from the other categories of SMEs, the very small enterprises (VSEs) and the small enterprises (SEs).

The growth of the new private sector in Russia has been associated with the expansion of trade and services, requiring a labour force with different occupational and skill characteristics from those of the Soviet economy. This paper reports on the first research ever undertaken on training practices in the new private sector in Russia. The analysis is based on forty case studies of new private enterprises and a large-scale household survey in four relatively prosperous Russian cities carried out in the first half of 1998. The paper shows that the old system of vocational retraining has largely collapsed, but very little has arisen to take its place. The majority of new private employers make little provision for the training of their employees, relying heavily on training provided by previous state employers or on the motivation of their own employees or prospective employees to undertake training on their own initiative, at their own expense and in their own time. At the same time, the availability of appropriate training is limited and it is extremely expensive in relation to the resources available to new private employers. Nevertheless, those who undertake training experience significant increases in earnings.  相似文献

Materiel managers are faced with a shrinking world and changing work environment. The needs and expectations of the customer have shifted because of the increasing number of multicultural groups. These groups will continue to assert their right to culturally sensitive care. Materiel managers also need to learn to support and enhance the skills of a multicultural work force. One important tool for change will be technology. However, technology that brings the world closer together also creates new challenges for managers, who will have to deal with multicultural colleagues, buyers, sellers, and manufacturers of goods and services.  相似文献
