There's an app for that: The impact of reminder apps on student learning and anxiety

Today's students experience increased anxiety around school and have difficulty keeping track of course assignments. The authors conceptually develop and empirically test a model of the impact of a homework reminder mobile application (app) on executive function skills and learning outcomes with undergraduate business students. The findings suggest that perceived usefulness of Homework Suite Planner app positively predicted students' executive functioning by increasing their organization and time management. Increases in executive functioning due to the Homework Suite app led to more completed assignments, lower anxiety about forgetting homework assignments, and greater overall learning satisfaction with the course. Future research and implications for higher education instructors are discussed.

Programmed Learning-Policy Analysis: An Experiment in Teaching Principles of Economics

Darnton reports on an experiment using programmed instruction in macroeconomics. He also explains how assignments to write “position papers” on economic policies are used. An analysis of the experiment deals with the time devoted to the course by students and instructor, student understanding of economics and student attitude toward this approach. The TUCE was used as the testing instrument, and Darnton asserts that the experimental group did better than the control group on complex application questions. The experimental approach proved to be popular with the students, and the author claims that it provided for a more efficient use of faculty resources.     

The Use of Course Evaluation Scores to Influence Teaching and Research Activities

The issue of course and teacher evaluations is one which continues to engender great interest. In this article, Paul Kipps comments on the Hansen-Kelley model as presented in the Fall 1973 issue of this journal, and then presents his own modifications and extensions of the model. These modifications deal mainly with the shape of the indifference curves and the slope of the output possibilities curve. The Kipps analysis casts doubts on the effectiveness of efforts to make significant improvements in the teaching output of research-oriented professors, and in the research work of teaching-oriented faculty members through voluntary incentive systems.
