Hayek’s 1945 Finlay Memorial Lecture: Tracing the origins and evolution of his ‘true’ individualism

Hayek’s original 1945 University College Dublin lecture outlined the origins and evolution of two different interpretations of ‘individualism’, comparing and contrasting what Hayek terms ‘true’ and ‘false’ individualism notwithstanding the misleading contemporary interpretations and distorted perceptions of the assumptions underlining ‘true’ individualism. Hayek developed and extended the Scottish Enlightenment theory of spontaneous order originally formulated by Adam Ferguson’s maxim that social order was the result of unintended human action rather than the result of deliberate human design in order to explain the origin of complex social structures, which originated in a Cromwellian maxim. The origination and inspiration for the title of Hayek’s lecture is also considered, as is the influence of other thinkers; Mandeville, Tocqueville, Mill, Acton and Schatz that Hayek cites in his Dublin lecture.     

The global business revolution, the cascade effect, and the challenge for firms from developing countries

The global business revolution since the 1980s has witnessedan unprecedented degree of industrial consolidation and concentrationof business power at a global level. Firms with powerful, globallyrecognised technologies and/or brands constitute the ‘systemsintegrators’ at the apex of extended supply chains. Thispaper examines the supply chains in four different sectors:aerospace, telecommunications, automobiles and beverages. Itfinds that these sectors have striking similarities in the wayin which the core systems integrators have stimulated industrialconcentration across the whole supply chain. This ‘cascadeeffect’ has profound implications for firms from developingcountries in catching up at the firm level.     

Spell durations and the impact of censoring

A grouped hazard approach for analysing multiple-spell durations subject to censoring is applied to spells of absence from the workplace. We follow Barmby, Orme and Treble's (1991) procedure for dealing with unobserved heterogeneity, but argue that their treatment of the observed discrete data, and the inherent censoring, is inappropriate and could lead to significant overestimation of duration dependence. Top Income Adjustments and Inequality: An Investigation of the EU-SILC†

This paper provides a novel assessment of how the World Inequality Database (WID) top income adjustment applied by Blanchet, Chancel, and Gethin (2021) to European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) data for 26 countries over 2003–2017 for Distributional National Accounts purposes affects inequality in equivalized gross and disposable household income. On average, the Gini is increased by around 2.4 points for both gross and disposable income, with notable differences across countries but limited impact on trends. EU-SILC countries that rely on administrative register data see relatively small effects on inequality. Comparing with two other recent studies, differences in impacts on measured inequality depend less on the adjustment method and more on whether external data sources are used.
