Learning and development opportunities as a tool for the retention of volunteers: a motivational perspective

The growing reliance on volunteers in Australia has heightened the need for non‐profit organisations to retain these valuable resources. However, the current literature on volunteer retention is limited. One potential way volunteers can be retained is by providing learning and development opportunities (LDOs). This study investigates the relationship between volunteer perceptions of LDOs, their motivations for volunteering, and retention. Analyses revealed significant main effects for LDOs and volunteer motivations on retention and several interactive effects demonstrating that LDOs can have differential effects on retention depending on the reasons for volunteering.     

When nutritional guidelines and life collide: family fruit and vegetable socialisation practices in low socioeconomic communities

Abstract

Parents play a critical role in promoting fruit and vegetable consumption, for eating patterns established early in life tend to persist into adulthood. Despite this, the factors that facilitate or inhibit parents’ capacity to socialise fruit and vegetable consumption into their children’s daily diets remain poorly defined. Thirty-eight semi-structured interviews with residents, allied healthcare professionals, community leaders, community programme leaders and a local government leader living or working in two low socioeconomic suburbs were consequently conducted to ascertain factors exogenous and endogenous to the family unit that shaped parental food socialisation practices. Budgetary and time constraints emerged as exogenous factors that constrained fruit and vegetable socialisation. Constraining effects were also found for a range of endogenous factors, including commensal experiences, children’s food fussiness and the feeding styles employed by parents. As such, while many caregivers may wish to socialise fruit and vegetable consumption into their children’s daily diets, their capacity to do so is often inhibited by factors beyond their volitional control. Failure to take heed of these factors could therefore result in the development of social marketing campaigns that are ineffective at best or give rise to unintentionally harmful outcomes at worst.     

The Intra‐ and Inter‐Personal Dynamics Associated with Consuming Sensitive Products: Understanding the Consumption of Erectile Function Aids Using Dimensional Qualitative Research

It is estimated that well over 300 million men will be diagnosed with erectile dysfunction by 2025. Men seeking treatment face a burgeoning array of options, some quite invasive. This study utilizes a dimensional qualitative research (DQR) approach to examine what men think, feel, and experience as they consider integrating erectile function (EF) aids into their sexual relationships. The findings suggest that the process of accepting changes in sexual functioning and consuming EF aids frequently moves beyond intrapersonal issues to encompass spouse/partner relationships. The insights gleaned from this study have implications not only for the marketing of EF aids but also for healthcare professionals assisting men in the treatment of their symptoms. Finally, the study findings expand current marketing applications of the DQR framework by demonstrating the value of second‐order modality analysis.     

THE BLACK-SCHOLES EQUATION REVISITED: ASYMPTOTIC EXPANSIONS AND SINGULAR PERTURBATIONS

In this paper, novel singular perturbation techniques are applied to price European, American, and barrier options. Employment of these methods leads to a significant simplification of the problem in all cases, by reducing the number of parameters. For American options, the valuation problem is reduced to a procedure that may be performed on a rudimentary handheld calculator. The method also sheds light on the evolution of option prices for all of the cases considered, the results being particularly illuminating for American and barrier options.     

An Improved Fixed-Rate Mortgage Valuation Methodology with Interacting Prepayment and Default Options

This paper considers in detail a realistic mortgage valuation model (including the potential for early prepayment and the risk of default), based on stochastic house-price and interest-rate models. As well as the development of a highly accurate numerical scheme to tackle the resulting partial differential equations, this paper also exploits singular perturbation theory (a mathematically rigorous procedure, based on the idea of the smallness of the volatilities), whereby mortgage valuation can be accurately approximated by very simple closed-form solutions. Determination of equilibrium contract rates, previously requiring many computational hours is reduced to just a few seconds, rendering this a highly useful portfolio management tool; these approximations compare favorably with the full numerical solutions. The method is of wide applicability in US or other mortgage markets and is demonstrated for UK fixed-rate mortgages, including insurance and coinsurance.     

Team Rewards: How Far Have We Come?

Although many organizations find teams to be important to their success, few have implemented reward systems that encourage team effort. This study examines the practices of 35 firms using team‐based reward programs and identifies some features of these programs that improve their effectiveness. The results indicate that the most valued programs were those associated with (1) high levels of communication to employees about the specifics of the plan, (2) strong worker involvement in the plan's design and implementation, and (3) team members' perceptions that the pay system was fair. HR managers considered more complex plans more beneficial than simple plans. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Conflicts and complementarities in the objectives of manpower policy: an illustration

The notion that policy-makers may encounter problems of conflict in the simultaneous pursuit of macro-economic objectives has accounted for a sizeable segment of the economics literature in recent years. In the academic context, this conflict has attracted considerable attention, generally in the form of the well-known Phillips-curve relationship. Non-academic opinion has also been reasonably well-informed as evidenced by the apparently widespread understanding of the inflation-unemployment trade-off dilemma.
