The objective of this paper is to propose a new model of competence in presence of network effects. We will introduce some
modifications in the Lotka-Volterra model, in order to solve its deficiencies. The main improvement is to introduce a modification
of Metcalfe’s Law, what allow us to reflect the effect of congestion externalities. The model’s validation, developed by numerical
simulation, confirms that its behaviour is quite similar to that observed in real markets.

This article addresses the question of whether lump-sum bonuses motivate salespeople to work harder to attain incremental
orders or whether they induce salespeople to play timing games (behaviors that increase incentive payments without providing
incremental benefits to the firm) with their order submissions. We find that lump-sum bonuses primarily motivate salespeople
to work harder—a result that is consistent with the widespread use of bonuses in practice, but that contradicts earlier empirical
work in academics.

Anticipating the speed of market entry can help the feature pioneer and me-too brands develop more informed product launch
strategies. This paper explains imitation speed, broken down into the incidence and timing of imitation, across 144 imitators
and 847 nonimitators in 22 consumer packaged goods subcategories. On average, it takes 85 weeks for a me-too brand to introduce
its feature imitation. Increasing category market share increases the incidence of imitation and, conditional on their occurrence,
decreases the time to market of feature imitators. Faster entry arises for store brands as they are more likely to imitate
and tend to take shorter times to market. Price premium does not have a significant effect on the incidence or timing of a
me-too brand as it tends to dissipate after the first year. Brands imitate innovative features more often than noninnovative
features. Some evidence indicates these imitators can take a longer time to enter the market. New product managers may benefit
from the direction as well as the magnitude of these results.

Several drivers of entrepreneurial aspirations and entrepreneurial motivations are investigated using country-level data from
the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) for the years 2005 and 2006. We estimate a two-equation model explaining aspirations
using motivations and socioeconomic variables, and explaining motivations using socioeconomic variables. We find that countries
with a higher incidence of increase-wealth-motivated entrepreneurs tend to have a higher prevalence of high-job-growth and
export-oriented entrepreneurship and that a country’s level of social security relates negatively to the prevalence of innovative,
high-job-growth, and export-oriented entrepreneurship. We also find that the increase-wealth motive mediates the relationship
between socioeconomic variables and entrepreneurial aspirations.

Cellular phone carriers typically offer complicated nonlinear tariffs. Consumers make a discrete choice among several rate
plans. Each plan has a nonlinear price schedule, and price is usually lower for in-network calls. I present an empirical framework
to estimate demand under such nonlinear pricing schemes by using parsimonious carrier-level data and apply the estimation
method to analyze the market in Taiwan. I evaluate the impacts of termination-based pricing schemes on the market structure
by counterfactual simulations. There is no evidence showing that the network effect resulting from termination-based pricing
has significant effects on market structure.

We investigate the effects of new business formation on employment change in German regions. A special focus is on the lag-structure
of this effect and on differences between regions. The different phases of the effects of new business formation on regional
development are relatively pronounced in agglomerations as well as in regions with a high-level of labor productivity. In
low-productivity regions, the overall employment effect of new business formation activity might be negative. The interregional
differences indicate that regional factors play an important role.

Our study investigates differences in CEO turnover between focused and diversified firms to determine whether diversification
strategies are necessarily associated with governance efficiency in family businesses. We find that large family CEO firms
are more likely to engage in corporate diversification than are small non-family CEO firms and their CEOs are seldom replaced.
Large family CEO diversified firms also have lower turnover sensitivity relative to focused firms. The results imply that
the CEOs of diversified firms have entrenched themselves, thereby increasing agency costs within family businesses. However,
we fail to find diversification discounts in family businesses. It is interesting that CEOs tend to diversify their businesses
in order to decrease firm risk. Founding families favor risk-reducing decisions in order to maintain family wealth and prestige;
suggesting that family businesses are more interested in survival than growth. Although family businesses may benefit from
risk reduction, a negative relationship between diversification level and CEO turnover is still evidence of poor corporate
governance. Agency theory may not completely account for the adoption of diversification strategies in family businesses and
corporate diversification may weaken the effectiveness of internal monitoring mechanisms.

This paper analyses the performance of the small and medium-sized manufacturing firms during the period 1995–2001, focusing
on the degree of technical inefficiency and its determinants. We use a micro panel data set to simultaneously estimate a stochastic
frontier production function and the inefficiency determinants using an unbalanced panel of manufacturing firms. Our empirical
results suggest that small and medium-sized firms tend to be less inefficient than the large firms are. Also, we centre our
analysis in the effect on efficiency of some organisational factors related to the managerial ability to use and adjust capital
and labour properly.

Much of the theoretical work on industry dynamics focuses on the role of ‘noisy’ selection and incomplete information on firm
entry and survival. We extend this research by looking at the impact of firm heterogeneity on employment effects for 320 U.S.
Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA). We find that only start-ups with greater than 20 and less than 500 employees have persistent
employment effects over time and only in large diversified metropolitan regions. Therefore, both the type of entry (Gazelles)
and the characteristics of the region are important for employment growth.

The paper examines the impact of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on the survival of business start-ups. FDI has potential
for both negative displacement/competition effects as well as positive knowledge spillover and linkage effects on new ventures.
We find a net positive effect for the whole dataset. However, a major contribution of the paper is to outline and test an
argument that this effect is likely to be comprised of a net negative effect in dynamic industries (high churn: firm entry
plus exit relative to the stock of firms) alongside a net positive effect in static (low churn) industries. We find evidence
to support this view. The results identify new effects of globalisation on enterprise development with associated challenges
for industrial policy.

This paper examines the issue of image feedback effects and potential drivers of these effects by analyzing real-world extensions
that have been introduced successfully in the market, using a longitudinal field study. Within the context of typical FMCG
extensions, the authors find strong evidence that even for successful extensions, negative image feedback effects can occur,
particularly when the perceived quality of the extension fails to meet the quality level of the parent brand. Strong brands
tend to be more vulnerable to negative image feedback effects because consumers have a higher reference level for their extensions
than for those of weaker brands. The likelihood of negative feedback effects decreases as the level of perceived fit and consumers’
perceptions of the general extendibility of the parent brand increases. But managers cannot, at least in the short run, mitigate
negative image feedback effects through increased advertising support. Finally, the findings demonstrate that the feedback
effects of a new extension product on parent brand image diminish over time.

The paper presents the results of a study dealing with the adoption of eBusiness applications in two Italian industrial districts:
the textile district in Como and the wood/furniture district in the area of Brianza. These two districts are part of important
“made in Italy” industries, with a high volume of worldwide exports. The goal of the paper is to show how Internet technology
is changing the behavior of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in these two local (but with worldwide relevance) districts
and to understand how the potential benefits and constraints for SMEs pointed out in several literature contributions are
really acting in these districts.

The aim of the present report is to review research demonstrating the role played by expectations for observed illusory price
increases after the euro introduction in Germany. In laboratory experiments when participants are asked to estimate price
changes in a restaurant following the euro introduction, the price estimates are found to be biased in the direction of the
expectation of rising prices. The research also examines the extent to which a similar judgment bias is evident in other areas
and how interventions counteract the bias. A further focus of the research is on the underlying process. In this respect the
results show that the bias is based on a selective outcome correction process not previously described. Theoretical implications
and practical implications for consumer policy issues are highlighted.

This paper explores the effects of new business formation on employment growth in Spanish manufacturing industries. New firms
are believed to make an important contribution to economic growth but the extent of this contribution is unclear. We consider
time lags of new firm formation as explanatory variables of employment change and identify how long the effect of new firm
entries on employment lasts. Our main results show that the effects of new business formation are positive in the short term,
negative in the medium term and positive in the long term, thus confirming the existence of indirect supply-side effects found
in similar studies for other countries.

We analyze how an incumbent defends its competitive advantage with a focus on the under-examined methods of actively defending
against the threats posed by rival innovation. We describe, delineate and analyze the set of such defenses and their likely
effects. The set of such defenses differs substantially from many standard defenses, such as those aimed at defeating the
threat of imitation. The further study of these pre-emptive innovation defenses is important because these defenses are different
and because they can substantially affect the sustainability of firm profits and the pace of different of types of innovation.

In this paper, we compare two datasets designed to measure entrepreneurship: The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) dataset
and the World Bank Group Entrepreneurship Survey (WBGES) dataset. We find a number of important differences when the data
are compared. First, GEM data tend to report significantly higher levels of early stage entrepreneurship in developing economies
than do the World Bank business entry data, while the World Bank business entry data tend to be higher than GEM data for developed
countries. Second, we find that the magnitude of the difference between the datasets across countries is related to the local
institutional and environmental conditions for entrepreneurs, after controlling for levels of economic development. Our findings
suggest that entrepreneurs in developed countries have greater ease and incentives to incorporate, both for the benefits of
greater access to formal financing and labor contracts, as well as for tax and other purposes not directly related to business
activities.

This article examines how firm growth is influenced by the strength of the industrial cluster in which the firm is located.
It presents econometric estimates of firm growth for 56 two-digit industries in the UK. In about half of these industries,
there is a positive and statistically significant association between firm growth and own-sector employment. Significant associations
between firm growth and other-sector employment are less common, but where these arise they are generally negative. We find
that a weak rule of thumb applies in most industries: own-sector effects are positive or insignificant, while other-sector
effects are negative or insignificant. Cluster effects are strongest in manufacturing, manufacturing-related, and infrastructure,
but weaker in services.

We investigate the relationship between free-standing insert advertising style and coupon redemption. Results from two experiments
indicate that the propensity to clip a coupon can be enhanced by matching ad tone (emotional vs rational) to the nature of
a consumer’s primary motivation with respect to coupon usage. Moreover, this result appears to hold for consumers with both
procoupon and anticoupon inclinations.

This paper gives an overview of the empirical research on the effects of new business formation on regional development and
introduces the contributions to this special issue. The effects of new businesses on regional development emerge over a longer
time-period of up to ten years. A main focus of the contributions to this special issue is on the distribution of these effects
over time and on the magnitude of the overall effect. While the basic pattern found for the different countries and regions
is quite similar, the magnitude of the overall effect can be different and may even be negative. There are strong indications,
that the type of entrants plays an important role in this respect.
