This paper applies the Kalman filter technique to look at the relationship among real interest rates, inflation, and the term structure of interest rate under the expectations hypothesis. Using quarterly data from 1960:1 to 1991:1 for inflation, three month nominal short term interest rates and long term yields with maturities from one to five years, this paper finds that the expectations hypothesis of the term structure holds up well for the data under the assumptions of a time-varying premium and a random-walk real interest rate. In other words, a reconciliation of the expectations hypothesis with the data is attained by assuming time-varying term premium and non-stationary real interest rate.  相似文献

The downwards trend exhibited in Chile’s nominal term structure since 2003 has been a common pattern shared by other developed and developing economies. To understand the behaviour of the nominal yield curve in Chile, we rely on an affine dynamic term structure model which allows the term structure to decompose into the expected short-term interest rate (related to the monetary policy expectation) and the term premium. We show that most of the fall of long-term interest rates as well as its dynamics are related to the term premium rather than the expected short-term interest rate. Moreover, we find evidence that term premium is driven primarily by the US term premium and domestic nominal uncertainty derived from expected inflation.  相似文献

The hypothesis that the forward rate is an unbiased predictor of the future spot rate has been rejected in many empirical studies. The rejection of this hypothesis could occur because market behavior is inconsistent with rational–expectations or because there exists a risk premium. Equations describing the forward premium and the change in the exchange rate are estimated jointly, and tests of both the rational–expectations and no–risk–premium hypotheses are conducted. Empirical estimates, obtained using quarterly data for the yen–dollar exchange rate, reject the rational–expectations hypothesis and suggest that there exists a time–varying risk premium.  相似文献

This study empirically identifies the impact of various macroeconomic factors on the default risk premium. Using monthly data for the period 1970–2010 for the US, our estimations indicate that the monetary policy aggregates, risk-free interest rate, term structure of interest rates, inflation, and the state of the business cycle influence the risk premium. The results also provide some evidence in support of the hypothesis that the development of information technology has had a decreasing impact on the risk premium. As expected, various financial crises have had substantial and long-lasting effects on the premium. The results suggest that the direct impact of the subprime crisis and Lehman’s collapse on the risk premium was as large as two and a half percentage-points for a sustainable period. Foreign financial crises, in turn, have lowered the risk premium in the US market, suggesting a flight-to-safety phenomenon.  相似文献

This paper defines the concepts of indirect and direct risk premium effects and analyzes their properties in an exchange rate model. In the model, these effects are endogenously determined in a rational expectations equilibrium. For the effect of an interest rate shock, they have the opposite signs and the indirect risk premium effect can dominate the direct risk premium effect under reasonable parameters. This means that domestic short‐term bonds and foreign bonds are complements in the model even though domestic long‐term bonds and foreign bonds are substitutes. This model, focusing on the indirect risk premium effect and on the term structure of interest rates, can be combined with a small sample bias approach to explain stylized facts about the forward premium anomaly, which is found for short‐term interest rates, but not for long‐term interest rates.  相似文献

After appointing Federal Reserve Chairman Powell, President Trump put pressure on the Fed to cut interest rates. We show that, on average, a statement from Trump on the Fed led to lower long‐term interest rates, consistent with expectations of lower expected future short rates. However, the impact of Trump's statements declined over time. (JEL E52, E43, E32)  相似文献

We study how unconventional monetary policy announcements affected professional forecasters' predictions of bond rates, gross domestic product growth and inflation using data from the monthly survey by the Wall Street Journal. We find that unconventional monetary policy (UMP) announcements moved predicted bond rates in the direction the Fed intended. UMP announcements had differential impacts on forecasters' predictions; they also tended to move growth and inflation predictions in directions opposite those the Fed intended due to Fed information effects. A policy implication of our study is that the Fed should communicate economic projections to the public separately from monetary policy announcements to mitigate Fed information effects. The empirical finding that the relative yield spread for taxable and tax-exempt bonds decreases across the term structure is usually attributed to tax differentials and/or arbitrage opportunities. Using monthly data, it is found that the decresing term structure of relative yield spreads is determined by the decreasing forward marginal tax rate; increasing default risk premium; increasing tax-timing option premium; and expected rate of inflation  相似文献

This paper exploits information from the term structure of survey expectations to identify news shocks in a DSGE model with rational expectations. We estimate a structural business-cycle model with price and wage stickiness. We allow for both unanticipated and anticipated components (“news”) in each structural disturbance: neutral and investment-specific technology shocks, government spending shocks, risk premium, price and wage markup shocks, and monetary policy shocks. We show that the estimation of a standard DSGE model with realized data obfuscates the identification of news shocks and yields weakly or non-identified parameters pertaining to such shocks. The identification of news shocks greatly improves when we re-estimate the model using data on observed expectations regarding future output, consumption, investment, government spending, inflation, and interest rates - at horizons ranging from one-period to five-periods ahead. The news series thus obtained largely differ from their counterparts that are estimated using only data on realized variables. Moreover, the results suggest that the identified news shocks explain a sizable portion of aggregate fluctuations. News about investment-specific technology and risk premium shocks play the largest role, followed by news about labor supply (wage markup) and monetary policy.  相似文献

A key issue around putting the present-value model into practice is how to construct the unobserved future expectations of the fundamental variables related to an asset. One approach is to fit a vector autoregression (VAR) for the fundamental variables and deduce their future expectations from the estimated VAR. An alternative is to directly specify the future expectations as unobserved components (UC) and use the Kalman filter to extract their estimates from the realized data. This article examines whether the predictions of the present-value model are consistent across the two approaches. Constructing the VAR and UC versions of the standard present-value model, we examine how the two versions compare in identifying the main driver of the US and UK housing markets. For the UK, the two approaches consistently attribute most variations in the price–rent ratio to the expected future risk premium for housing investment. For the US, however, the two approaches deliver considerably different results: the VAR version marks the expected risk-free rate of return, whereas the UC version singles out the expected risk premium as the main driver of the ratio. We conclude that the choice between the VAR and UC approaches is not a trivial issue related to utilizing the present-value model.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to gain a better understanding of the black market premium—the percentage differential between the black market and the official exchange rate. Tests are used to see whether the black market premium responds to variations in expectations about the official exchange rate in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico. Expectations of devaluation do cause movements in the black market premium for Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico but this behavior is not observed for Colombia. Colombian economic agents seem less sensitive to expected returns. This perhaps explains the relatively flat black market premium series observed for Colombia.  相似文献

We document two stylized facts of US short‐term and long‐term interest rate data seemingly incompatible with the expectations hypothesis: low contemporaneous cross‐correlation and relatively slow adjustment to long‐run relationships. We explain these features in a small structural model with three types of randomness: While a persistent monetary policy shock implies immediate identical reactions through the term structure, both a transitory policy shock and an autocorrelated risk premium allow for sustained deviations. Indeed, we find important impacts and persistence of risk premia and considerable contribution of transitory policy shocks to short rates. Results of standard expectations hypothesis tests can be rationalized.  相似文献

Recent research has examined apparent deviations from the expectations theory of the term structure detectable in regression tests, which may be interpreted as efficiency tests. Efficiency is rejected in many studies. Inference is complicated, however, by the non-normality of regression residuals, invalidating standard parametric test procedures. The present paper examines these rejections using robust diagnostic methods and non-parametric tests. We find some evidence against the expectations theory of the term structure in U.S. data, but not in Canadian. We also investigate the possible explanation of a link between forecast error and the yield spread through models of time-variation in the liquidity premium.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to test the expectations theory of the term structure of interest rates in the Australian market for short-term financial assets. The paper finds that the joint hypothesis of the expectations theory and zero (or a constant risk premium) cannot be rejected in the period since the introduction of the tender system for sale of government securities in 1979. The floating of the Australian dollar in 1983 did not alter the findings.  相似文献

Previous writers have attempted to resolve the equity premium puzzle by employing a utility function that depends on current consumption minus (or relative to) past habit consumption. This paper points out that an individual's current utility may also depend upon how well off in the recent past he or she had expected to be today. Hence we add the concept “expectation formation” to the utility modification term in a model with a habit‐formation utility function. We apply the model to the equity premium puzzle and find that it is able to fit the data with a relatively low coefficient of relative risk aversion. Furthermore, we introduce an updated data sample and apply different values of discounting factors, and find that in all circumstances, the model is able to generate coefficients of risk aversion that are consistent with theory. Hence we conclude that the model is able to resolve the equity premium puzzle.  相似文献

This paper tests the joint hypothesis of rational expectations and the expectations theory of the term structure using the Livingston survey data on price inflation forecasts. For a variety of sample periods, the paper presents evidence that the data are consistent with the theory. Since inflation forecasts, unlike interest rates, are not linked to specific underlying financial assets, the relationship between longterm and short-term inflation forecasts should not embody risk premia. This paper's findings therefore lend support to the view that a time-varying risk premium is needed to explain the observed term structure of interest rates.  相似文献

This paper derives a liquidity-adjusted conditional two-moment capital asset pricing model (CAPM) and a liquidity-adjusted conditional three-moment CAPM respectively based on theory of stochastic discount factor. The liquidity-adjusted conditional two-moment CAPM shows that a security's conditional expected excess return consists of three parts: its conditional expected liquidity cost, the systemic risk premium and the liquidity risk premium. The liquidity-adjusted conditional three-moment CAPM shows that a security's conditional expected excess return depends on its conditional expected liquidity cost, the conditional covariance between its return and the market return, the conditional covariance between its liquidity cost and the market liquidity cost, and the conditional coskewness of its return and the market return.  相似文献

Under inflation targeting, S. Cho and J. Lee (2014, Inflation targeting and predictive power of term spreads. Seoul Journal of Economics, 27, 391–419), A. Estrella (2005, Why does the yield curve predict output and inflation? The Economic Journal, 115, 722–744) and P.L. Siklos (2000, Inflation targets and the yield curve: New Zealand and Australia versus the US. International Journal of Finance &; Economics, 5, 15–32) have reported that the predictive power of yield spreads for future inflation decreases in inflation targeting countries. In this paper, we decompose the yield spread into the expectations hypothesis component and the term premium, and find that the decrease in the predictability is mostly due to the deterioration of information embedded in the expectations hypothesis component. Our finding reveals that if inflation targeting is successful in achieving its main goal, then the expectations for future inflation are anchored at the target inflation rate (or range), and thereby the predictive contents of the term spreads regarding future inflation decrease.  相似文献
