Research on sustainable mobility transitions has focused on battery-electric vehicles, urban ‘smart’ cars, fuel-cell powered transport modes and power-assisted bicycles. While these studies have usefully exposed some of the dynamics governing sociotechnical change, developments outside the purview of sustainability have been largely ignored. A critical area of neglect concerns the growing popularity of personal aeromobility. Passenger dissatisfaction with commercial airlines, public concerns about terrorism, increasing affluence and creative marketing have expanded interest in private aviation. In parts of the USA, customised air travel is becoming a straightforward and affordable transport alternative. This article describes the mounting popularity of four segments of this trend: business/personal airplane acquisition, fractional aircraft ownership, flight-time cards and air taxis. It also highlights the role that the federal government is currently playing to overcome the technological obstacles to more pervasive personal aeromobility. A concluding section considers the ramifications of these activities on contemporary efforts to foster sustainable mobility and to conceptualise viable transition pathways.  相似文献

This paper presents a price index constructed to measure the real price and real output of corporate business jet aircraft. It employs a chained price index methodology to properly account for the effect of changes in aircraft quality and product lines on the price index. The index indicates that the average price level of corporate jets has significantly outpaced the general price level measured by the GDP deflator, nearly doubling the real price of the product over a 35-year period from 1968 to 2003, which could have negatively affected the demand for the product. Because the GDP deflator significantly understates the price increase in corporate jets, the industry’s real output is overstated when its nominal sales are deflated with a general price index. The paper suggests that an industry-specific price index allows more accurate analyses of real economic activity of an industry. The methodology used in this paper could be useful for other industries where product price movements vary significantly from the changes in the general price level. Dealing with retired aircraft taking into account the environmental, social, and economic impacts is emerging as an air transportation problem for the near future. The players involved in the problem wish to solve this challenge in a systematic way to benefit from the value extracted from the core activities of the end-of-life (EoL) aircraft treatment, decrease the environmental impacts, and at the same time maximize the social value. This paper proposes a holistic approach to EoL aircraft treatment considering lean management, sustainable development, and the global business environment. An integrated optimization framework is proposed to support decision-making at both the strategic and managerial levels. The flexibility of the framework makes it possible to compare different business models, dismantling strategies, and network structures that impact the efficiency, stability, and leanness of the recovery network. A solution methodology based on the joint application of fuzzy interactive approach and genetic algorithm is introduced. The application perspective and guidelines for pilot study are also provided. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that recovery of EoL aircraft is considered based on three aspects of sustainability, lean, and global business. Therefore, this study provides many promising perspectives in this context to enrich the literature of EoL aircraft as a new aviation industry challenge and opportunity.  相似文献
