Financial liberalisation and sustained interest differentials

In the last decade, many of the more advanced developing countries in Latin America and Asia have deregulated and opened up their financial markets. What impact has this had on the efficiency of the financial sector? How can the existence of sustained interest differentials be explained?     

Constrained listening,audience alignment,and expert communication

We consider a cheap-talk setting with two senders and a continuum of receivers with heterogenous preferences. Each receiver is constrained to listen to one of the senders but can choose which sender to listen to. The introduction of a second sender facilitates more informative communication and even enables full communication for a large set of sender preference pairs. We use the model to assess the size and characteristics of sender audiences, the amount of information communicated, and the impact of the senders' biases on the receivers' actions.     

Stochastic differential equation modeling the prevalence of rare chronic diseases with an application to systemic lupus erythematosus

In this article we describe a system of stochastic differential equations to model the age‐specific prevalence of rare chronic diseases from incidence and mortality rates. As an application, the age profile of the prevalence of systemic lupus erythematosus in England and Wales in1995 is calculated. The results are in good agreement with the observed epidemiological measures.     

Globalisation and the competitiveness of regional blocs

Both globalisation and regionalisation have gained momentum in the last two decades in every part of the world, involving economies at all levels of development. The following article examines the major determinants affecting the competitive position of selected regional blocs and suggests some policy stances which promise to support both further regional integration and improved competitiveness at a global level.     

Valuing and value in diversity: the policy‐implementation gap in an IT firm

The focus of UK‐based research on diversity theory and diversity managers has led to a relative dearth of studies focusing on the critical issue of line managers' agency in policy implementation. This article provides a context‐sensitive organisational case study of the policy‐implementation gap in the UK base of one multinational IT company. The article explores male and female managers' perspectives on valuing diversity at a level of general abstraction, and the extent to which they see value in diversity for the effectiveness of their project teams. In the context of a White, male‐dominated industry, the case study shows how the gap is sustained rather than bridged despite the implementation of numerous diversity initiatives.

Customer Satisfaction and Elapsed Time since Purchase as Drivers of Price Knowledge

This study investigates the influence of customer satisfaction and elapsed time since purchase on customers’ explicit and implicit knowledge of price. The results of two large, independent surveys of customers who purchased a consumer durable good indicate that customer satisfaction and elapsed time have different effects on explicit versus implicit price knowledge. Customer satisfaction has a negative impact on explicit price knowledge, but no substantial effect on implicit price knowledge. The length of time between purchase and retrieval of the price information has a negative impact on explicit price knowledge but no substantial effect on implicit price knowledge. Finally, customer satisfaction has a moderating role, in that the higher the customer satisfaction level, the stronger the negative impact of elapsed time on explicit price knowledge.
