The mission of Business Horizons is to publish research that practitioners can understand to help them change their thoughts and actions. However, this mission remains an elusive ideal for many business school academics as they struggle to overcome the research-practice gap. To help scholars bridge this gap, we present social media as a boundary-spanning technology to be open to connecting with, learning from and working with academics and other stakeholders outside their field. Social media can be used as a boundary-spanning technology to help bridge the research-practice gap. To support this idea, we present a process model of five research activities—networking, framing, investigating, disseminating, and assessing—and describe how social media can make each activity more open. We present a framework of four social media-enabled open academic approaches—connector, observer, promoter, and influencer—and outline some do’s and don’ts for engaging in each approach. We also discuss the potential dark side of openness through social media and offer some coping strategies. As per the mission and scope of Business Horizons, this article aims to help business academics rethink and change their practices so that our profession is more widely regarded for how our research positively impacts business practice and society in general. 相似文献

This study documents the intellectual structure and progress of hospitality leadership research over the past sixty years by presenting a perspective and conspectus. The authors use text mining analysis to explore topic highlights and how they have shifted over time. Leadership development has been the predominant feature followed by contemporary leadership behaviors. Of the eight leadership domains revealed by the co-citation and text mining analyses, four are associated with leadership styles, which in their turn impact on employees. LMX is the leading theme in hospitality leadership research, with growing attention to the darker side of leadership, particularly abusive supervision. The current study contributes to the hospitality literature by considering coverage of leadership issues since the 1960 s. Furthermore, it encompasses the evolution of hospitality leadership research from the development of theory to a focus on impacts, thereby providing crucial insights that may allow industry professionals to lead their organizations more effectively and efficiently. 相似文献

The authors examined the publications and impact of highly productive business and management education (BME) scholars across the business disciplines of accounting, economics, finance, information systems, management, marketing, and operations management. Results from a hierarchical cluster analysis revealed five clusters of scholars: leading BME Scholars, leading discipline-focused BME scholars, high-profile BME scholars, focused BME scholars, and recognized BME scholars. Organizations typically depend upon performance evaluation measures to provide feedback to managers regarding the achievement of strategic objectives. However, performance evaluation is often focused on negative aspects of performance, suggesting that managers may not be receiving enough reinforcement of the positive elements of their decisions. When applied effectively, performance measures not only create desirable motivation, but also encourage communication and the exchange of information among managers. Under this scenario, individual managers achieve their personal goals, while the organization satisfies its strategic objectives. The application of positive organizational scholarship principles to performance evaluation metrics can help make the evaluation process more effective. Using performance measures framed in a positive manner can help generate more creativity, more problem-solving ability, and greater communication among managers, leading to progress toward organizational objectives. We illustrate this approach with the application of positive metrics to the balanced scorecard for mid-level managers in implementing business strategy. 相似文献

Understanding how organizations operate and finding ways to improve organizations are of central importance to managers and to scholars that study business. We believe that greater synergy can be developed between these two groups. In particular, we suggest that collaborating on issues that both groups view as interesting can provide a motivating and stimulating setting for finding ways to improve organizations. We also offer two series of specific recommendations: one for managers and one for scholars. These recommendations are intended to make each side’s goals more salient to the other and to help each side become a more valued resource for the other. 相似文献

如何整合教学与研究是学界的一个关键议题,但目前却鲜有学者探讨。在西方,教学与理论研究往往是同床异梦,而在东方,学者依循教学和研究"合一"的传统哲学理念。尊崇儒家传统的中国学者并不仅仅投身于西方同僚所关注的教学和研究—发表工作,他们的第一要务在于秉持有教无类、关怀社稷的精神,成为一名受人敬重的教师。本文以形成于西方的动态竞争理论为例,说明教学与研究如何平衡与整合,达到传统东方教育理念中的"合一"。本文希望在教学与研究之间搭建桥梁,为试图将理论引进课堂的学者,或是意欲拓展研究范畴的研究者提供指导。本文提出一个本质性的问题:在现代中国和全球的环境下,"学术"在管理学等应用学科领域中有何意涵? 相似文献

It is an appropriate time to examine the current achievements and the potential of Asian management research in shaping the body of management knowledge. The papers in this Special Issue examine the theoretical development and conceptualization of Asian management research and identify promising areas for future research. The papers summarize key research trends in several management areas and provide a critical analysis of what has been achieved, what is lacking, and what can be done in future studies. They argue, collectively, that it is fruitful to address some Asian phenomenon and generate theory for global-relevant issues. It is also meaningful to use Asian-developed constructs to study local and global issues. However, there are urgent needs for the development and validation of new constructs, designing measures and innovative methodology for conducting empirical studies, and linking the Asian-based issues and concepts to current scholarly conversations. 相似文献
